Gutter Guard, Leaf Guard, Eavestrough Screen: Same Thing?

Broadly, yes. You will see all of these terms used for products that cover the top of your eavestrough and keep debris out. Leaf guard tends to be the consumer facing name, gutter guard and gutter protection are the industry terms, and eavestrough screen usually refers to the cheaper mesh products sold in rolls at hardware stores.

The category that matters is the one you are buying into. A twenty dollar plastic mesh screen and a professionally installed aluminum system with a continuous hanger are both technically leaf guards, and they behave nothing alike after two winters. Everything below refers to the second kind.

The Alu-Rex Range

Alu-Rex makes several products and homeowners often arrive having read about one without realising there are others.

T-Rex is the premium continuous hanger system. It replaces your existing hangers entirely and adds structural rigidity along the full length of the trough, which is the reason it handles snow and ice load well.

Double Pro uses a two layer approach. A perforated outer surface handles bulk water and leaves, and a finer membrane underneath catches smaller debris that would pass through a single layer. This is the model that earns its money on properties with pine, spruce or cedar.

Gutter Clean is the more straightforward perforated product, aimed at homes with leaf debris rather than needle debris.

Clip n Guard attaches to the existing system rather than replacing hangers, which makes it the least invasive option in the range.

Kaycan ProGuard II

Kaycan takes a simpler approach, and simple is not a criticism.

ProGuard II is a heavy gauge aluminum guard with a single perforated surface, Canadian made, designed around temperature swing rather than around maximum filtration. It will not rot, peel or rust, and there is very little on it that can fail because there is very little to it.

That simplicity is a genuine advantage in two situations. It usually goes onto existing eavestroughs without requiring a hanger change, and there are fewer components to go wrong over a twenty year life. If your trees drop leaves rather than needles and your existing troughs are sound, ProGuard II does the job with less disruption and less complexity.

Where it gives ground to Alu-Rex is fine debris. A single perforated surface will let smaller material through that a dual membrane catches. On a property surrounded by pine, that difference shows up in the trough.

How Each Handles a Simcoe County Winter

This is where the marketing on both sides gets vague, so here is what actually matters.

No gutter guard prevents ice damming. Ice dams form because heat escapes into the attic, melts snow on the roof, and that meltwater refreezes at the cold roof edge. That is an insulation and ventilation problem. Any company telling you a gutter guard solves it is selling you the wrong product, and you should look at your soffit venting instead.

What a guard does affect is what happens once ice forms. Ice is heavy, and a trough full of it puts serious load on hangers and fascia. This is the real argument for Alu-Rex's continuous hanger models: the system carries load along the whole run rather than at individual fastening points, so there is less to pull loose.

With Kaycan, the load handling comes down to your existing hangers and the condition of your fascia board. On sound fascia with properly spaced hidden hangers, that is fine. On fascia that is already soft, adding any guard system is treating the symptom, and the fascia should be dealt with first.

Can Either Go on Your Existing Eavestroughs?

Usually Kaycan can. Alu-Rex depends on the model, because the continuous hanger systems replace your hangers as part of the installation.

But the more useful question is whether your existing eavestroughs are worth keeping. If your troughs are twenty years old, sagging slightly, or hung on spike and ferrule hardware, putting a quality guard on top of them is spending good money to extend the life of a system that is already near the end of its own. In that situation the sensible sequence is troughs first, guards at the same time.

If your eavestroughs are in good condition and correctly sloped, either system will go on without drama.

What Drives the Difference in Installation

Beyond the product itself, a few things determine how involved the job is:

The condition of your fascia. Soft or rotting fascia has to be addressed first. Guards add weight, and weight finds weak boards.

Whether hangers are being replaced. Continuous hanger systems are a more thorough installation than a guard that clips onto what is already there.

Roof access and storey height. Second storey runs, steep pitches and limited ladder access all add time.

How many valleys you have. Valleys concentrate both water and debris into short sections, and those sections often need a different approach from the rest of the run.

Whether your existing troughs are staying. Fitting guards to eavestroughs that will be replaced in three years is money spent twice.

Which One Suits Your Property

Choose Alu-Rex if you have pine, spruce or cedar dropping fine debris, you are dealing with second storey runs or awkward access where you genuinely do not want to be up there, your existing hangers are due for replacement anyway, or your eavestroughs take a heavy ice load each winter.

Choose Kaycan ProGuard II if your debris is mostly leaves rather than needles, your existing eavestroughs and fascia are in good condition, you want the least invasive installation, or you prefer a system with fewer components to think about.

Deal with something else first if your fascia is soft, your troughs are sagging, or your eavestroughs already overflow in heavy rain. A guard will not fix any of those and may hide them for a season.
